Registering for the French Civic Exam: The Step-by-Step Guide

Last updated: December 2025Verified for the 2026 Exam Process.

Booking your French Civic Exam (Examen Civique) is the first concrete step towards your new residence permit.

However, the process can be confusing because there isn't just one website. The government has outsourced the exam to two authorized organizations. Here is exactly how to navigate the system without booking the wrong test.

Quick Facts

  • 2 providers: CCIP and FEI
  • Cost: ~€70 (varies)
  • Booking: Online only
  • Required: Valid ID + Printed Convocation

1. Where do I register? (The 2 Official Bodies)

You cannot register at the Prefecture. You must book your slot online with one of the two state-approved providers. Both certificates are equally valid.

Option A: CCIP (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie)

  • Best for: People living in Paris/Île-de-France (but they have centers elsewhere too)
  • Pros: Usually has many slots available in major cities

Option B: FEI (France Éducation International)

  • Best for: People living in smaller cities or specific regions outside Paris
  • Pros: Wide network of partner centers across France

💡 Pro Tip

Check BOTH websites. If the CCIP center near you is full until March, the FEI center 10km away might have a slot next week.

2. Before you click "Pay": The Golden Rule

Do not guess your level.

Before you register, check the letter or email you received from the Prefecture (or your ANEF account status).

  • If you apply for the 4-Year Card, select Level CSP (Carte de Séjour Pluriannuelle)
  • If you apply for the 10-Year Card, select Level CR (Carte de Résident)
  • If you apply for Naturalization (French Citizenship), select Level NAT (Naturalization)

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING

If you pass the CSP (Standard) exam but you applied for a 10-Year Card, the Prefecture will REJECT your certificate. You will have to pay and take the test again.

Check your Prefecture notification first. If you book the wrong level, you waste your money.

3. The 6-Step Registration Process

1

Create your Candidate Account

Go to the CCIP or FEI website. You will need a valid email address. Use the exact name as it appears on your Passport.

2

Find a Center

Search by "Département" (e.g., 75, 69, 13). You do not have to take the exam in your home city. If you live in Lyon but find an earlier date in Saint-Étienne, you can go there.

3

Select the Exam Type

Look for "Examen Civique - Arrêté 2025". Ensure you check the box for Standard (CSP) or Advanced (CR) correctly.

4

Upload Documents

You will usually need to upload a scan of your Passport or current Residence Permit (Titre de Séjour).

5

Payment

Cost: Approximately ~€70 (varies by center).

Method: Credit card online (Visa/Mastercard). Keep the receipt!

6

Print your Convocation

You will receive a PDF "Convocation" by email. Print this. Do not rely solely on your phone battery on exam day.

4. On Exam Day: What to Expect

  • Arrive Early: At least 20 minutes before the time on your convocation. Late arrivals are often refused entry.
  • Bring ID: Your Passport or valid Titre de Séjour. (Copies are not accepted).
  • No "Cheat Sheets": Dictionaries, phones, and smartwatches are strictly forbidden.
  • The Interface: The exam is on a tablet or computer. You will click through 40 questions in 45 minutes.

After the exam

You'll receive your results within a few days. If you pass (32/40 or 80%), you'll get a success certificate to include in your residence permit application.

Good news: The success certificate has no expiration date. Once obtained, it's valid for life.

5. FAQ: Booking Your Slot

How much does the exam cost?
The registration fee is approximately €70 (varies by center). This fee is non-refundable if you miss the exam or fail. You will need to pay again to retake it.
How far in advance should I book?
Slots fill up fast, especially in Paris. We recommend booking 1 to 2 months before you need to submit your paperwork to the Prefecture.
Can I change my exam date later?
It depends on the specific center's policy. Usually, you can reschedule up to 7 days before, but refunds are rare. Check the 'CGV' (Terms & Conditions) before paying.
I don't have a credit card. Can I pay cash?
Most online platforms require a card. However, some local exam centers (often language schools partnered with FEI) might accept cash if you go to their office in person.
Is the registration fee refundable if I fail?
No. If you fail, you must pay the full registration fee again to retake the test.
What documents do I need on exam day?
Bring your Passport or valid Titre de Séjour (copies are not accepted) and your printed Convocation email. Do not rely solely on your phone.

Ready to book? Make sure you pass.

Failing the exam means losing the registration fee and delaying your visa.
